The 90s Girl Guide to: Surviving a Spanish Winter

When people think of Spain, they picture sunshine, tiny café tables, linen dresses, and a glass of wine that feels very main character. Winter is not invited to that fantasy. Trust me, I know. I was that overly confident American girl who genuinely thought Spain just skipped the cold part of the year. Spoiler alert: she does not.

Now, Spain is not giving you dramatic snowstorms. But depending on where you live, she will absolutely hand you a damp, stubborn cold that you didn’t prepare for. And unlike back in the States, where central heat is basically a birthright, many apartments here are not built with “toasty” as the goal.

Back home, heat and A/C are standard. You don’t even ask if your apartment has them; you assume. In Spain, heating can feel a little more optional, a little more exclusive club energy.

And yes, you might be thinking, okay, if there’s a unit on the wall, just turn it on? The reality is that many apartments are not well-insulated. The heat escapes, the cold lingers, and if you keep the unit running all day trying to recreate American-level coziness, your electricity bill might personally attack you.

So from one 90s girl to another, here is how we survive.

1. Romanticize the hot drink era
Tea, coffee, caldo, anything steaming. Is it a long-term fix? No. Does it feel like emotional support in a mug? Absolutely. There is something deeply comforting about wrapping your hands around warmth while pretending you are the main character in a movie, because you are!

2. Weaponize the hot shower
Temporary relief, yes, but immaculate vibes. A hot shower on a cold morning will reset your entire attitude. You will emerge believing in yourself again. It won’t heat your apartment, but it will heat your spirit, and honestly, sometimes that is enough.

3. Consider a gas heater
If your place does not have solid heating, this can be a lifesaver. From what I have seen, gas heaters tend to be cheaper to run than blasting electric heat 24/7. If you have an A/C unit that also heats? Congratulations, you are living in the penthouse of winter survival.

4. Dress like you are inside a 90s sleepover, not a fashion campaign
Layers are everything: socks, sweatshirts, oversized hoodies, and maybe even a scarf indoors. Yes, indoors. I have absolutely worn a scarf in my own living room and made peace with it. The wild part is that sometimes it is colder inside than outside. You will step onto your balcony for warmth and question reality. It is a rite of passage.

5. Invest in one serious wool blanket
Let me save you time and maybe some money. Six cheap blankets will not do what one thick wool blanket can. I learned this the hard way. Polyester tried, but wool understood the assignment. The first time I used a real wool blanket, I actually had to kick it off because I was too warm. Talk about growth!

6. Try a hot water bottle
Very European, and very practical. You fill it with hot water, tuck it under your blankets, and suddenly your bed feels like a safe little cocoon. It won’t heat the whole room, but it will heat you, and that is the mission.

7. Heated blankets, but be smart
Some people swear by them. Just remember, they use electricity, so if you are watching your bill, do a little research first. We are cozy, not reckless.

Winter in Spain is not the image we were sold. But once you stop fighting it and start adapting, it becomes kind of charming. Slower mornings. Layered outfits. Extra reasons to linger inside. It builds character. Very 90s coming-of-age energy. And the best part? The sunshine always comes back. Spain never stays gray forever. Until then, channel your inner 90s icon, layer up, boil water, and buy the wool blanket.

Love always,
