When you’re getting ready to move to Spain, packing feels like a guessing game. You’re sitting there like: “What do I actually need… and what am I going to regret not bringing?” This is technically your before-departure phase. But now that I’ve lived in Spain for a few years and have gone back to the U.S., I see things very differently. I’ve realized what I truly missed, what I overpacked, and what I wish I had stocked up on from the start.
So think of this as your shortcut. Learn from me so you don’t have to figure it out mid-crisis in a Spanish grocery store aisle.
1. Deodorant (Trust me on this one)
Let’s start strong. Deodorant in Spain is different. It’s actually better quality in many ways, less harsh, fewer chemicals, all that good stuff. But the tradeoff? It’s not as strong. If you’re used to U.S. deodorant, you will notice the difference.
So do yourself a favor: Bring a small inventory with you. Not your entire suitcase, but enough to last until you either adjust or accept your fate and start stocking up every time you go home.
2. Your Favorite Seasonings & Sauces
Spain has amazing food, but sometimes you just want your flavors. For me, that looked like:
- Taco seasoning
- Cajun seasoning
- Buffalo sauce (don’t ask, I just needed it 😭)
Think about what you reach for at home without thinking:
- Everything bagel seasoning
- Specific spice blends
- Hot sauces
You might find alternatives in Spain, but they won’t always hit the same.
3. Medications (Prescription + Over-the-Counter)
This is a big one. If you take prescription medication, try to come with at least a 6-month supply if possible. And don’t forget your go-to over-the-counter meds:
- Tylenol
- NyQuil / DayQuil
- Benadryl
Spain has equivalents, but they tend to be milder, which is great in theory until you actually need something that works fast and strong. Bring what you know works for your body.
4. Beauty Staples (Especially Hair Products)
If you’re a girl, you already know. Makeup? You’ll mostly be fine. Hair products? That’s where it gets tricky. Spain has great options, but not every brand is available and not every formula works the same.
If you have:
- A specific curl routine
- A holy grail product
- Something your hair depends on
Bring enough to last you. You can always experiment later, but at least you’ll have your basics covered.
5. Layers (Because Spain Is Not Always “Sunny & 75”)
I came to Spain thinking it would be warm all the time; I was wrong. Yes, Spain is sunny, but:
- Nights can get cold
- Winters can be chilly, depending on where you live
- Buildings don’t always have great insulation
I packed a few jackets and still ended up buying more. So, bring layers, real ones, not just “cute light jackets.”
6. Good Walking Shoes (and Backup Support)
You’re going to walk a lot, like, more than you think. So bring:
- At least 1–2 solid pairs of walking shoes
- Comfortable, supportive options
- Insoles (for extra support)
- Thick socks
Between daily life, travel, and just existing in Europe, your shoes go through it.
7. Whitening Strips (A little niche, but hear me out)
This might be personal, but I always bring whitening strips. They’re not as common or easy to find in Spain, and I like to use them regularly. If you’re someone who has a routine and uses specific products, just pack them. Future you will be glad.
8. Water Filters (Especially for the Shower)
Spain is known for having hard water. And you might notice it in your hair and your skin. You can find filters in Spain, but if you’re new and still figuring things out, it can feel overwhelming trying to shop for them in another language. So honestly? Bring a universal shower filter or basic water filters to get started. It’s one of those small upgrades that makes a big difference. (Yes, Spain has water filters as well)
9. Something That Feels Like Home
Moving abroad is exciting, but it can also feel a little lonely at times. Bring 1–2 things that comfort you:
- A favorite perfume
- A cozy sweater
- A small sentimental item
Nothing crazy, just something that makes your space feel like yours.
10. Travel Adapters (Don’t Forget These)
This one is so simple and so easy to forget. Bring:
- European/universal adapters
- Ones that allow multiple U.S. plugs, if possible
Because there’s nothing worse than landing, being exhausted, going to charge your phone, and realizing you can’t. Save yourself that moment.
Packing for Spain isn’t about bringing your entire life with you. It’s about being intentional. You’ll find almost everything you need once you’re here. But there are certain things that:
- Feel familiar
- Work better for you
- Or just make life easier
And those are worth thinking about ahead of time. At the end of the day, this move is about more than what’s in your suitcase. It’s about the life you’re building. But having the right things with you just makes the transition a little smoother.
Love always,
American Girl Meets World
