Bravas & The City: How Valencia Won My Heart (and My Stomach) One Potato at a Time

If love at first bite exists, then Bravas Fest in Valencia was my meet-cute with patatas bravas.

Bravas Fest hit Valencia in October, bringing with it an entire celebration dedicated to, you guessed it, crispy fried potatoes topped with spicy sauce. I had no idea how badly I needed this in my life… until I did. And now? There’s no going back.

Wait… A Whole Festival Just for Bravas?

Yes, and honestly? Iconic.

Bravas Fest brought together a lineup of restaurants, bars, and creative street food vendors, each serving up their own version of the classic Spanish tapa. We’re talking crispy-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside potatoes topped with everything from smoky aiolis to spicy tomato sauces with a little Basque-style flair.

It wasn’t just a free-for-all carb party either (although I wouldn’t have complained). You could actually vote on your favorite dish, meaning yes, I was taste-testing with a purpose. For science. For Spain. For the love of the patata.

I tried more variations than I can count; some were crunchy and rustic, others were gourmet, stacked with fancy toppings and drizzles. Some had paprika heat, others leaned creamy and garlic-heavy. All of them were delicious. All of them made me question why I’d been sleeping on this dish for so long.

To be honest, I think this festival was my official introduction to bravas, and I couldn’t be more impressed. It was like discovering fries for the first time, but Spanish. And spicier. And sexier.

Ever since the festival, it’s become a non-negotiable. If I go out for tapas and patatas bravas on the menu? I’m ordering them. No hesitation. They’ve become my baseline for judging restaurants, like: How do your bravas stack up against the ones I tried at Bravas Fest, sir?

Valencia really knows how to throw a food festival, and Bravas Fest was one for the books, fun, flavorful, and low-key addictive. Whether you’re a die-hard foodie or just someone who appreciates a good potato (hi, it’s me), this is one event you need to add to your calendar.

Also, just a fair warning: once you’ve had real bravas in Spain, there’s no turning back. You’re one crispy, saucy bite away from a lifelong obsession.

Love always,
