Finding Community: In Madrid, Spain

Moving to a new city can be exciting, but let’s be honest, making friends as an adult can feel a little like dating. You put yourself out there, hope people like you, and occasionally wonder if everyone else received a handbook on how to build a social life that somehow got lost in your mail. Thankfully, Madrid makes the process surprisingly easy.

Of all the cities I’ve lived in and traveled through, Madrid stands out as one of the most international and welcoming places to build a community. Whether you’re an auxilar, an Erasmus student, a digital nomad, an expat, or simply passing through for a few months, there are always people looking to connect.

Part of what makes Madrid so special is the constant flow of people. Every year, thousands of Erasmus students arrive from across Europe. Universities host study abroad programs filled with students eager to explore the city together. Tourists come and go year-round, and Madrid continues to attract professionals, creatives, entrepreneurs, and remote workers from all over the world. The result: A city where meeting new people isn’t the exception, it’s part of the culture.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that community rarely falls into your lap. Sometimes you have to be willing to show up alone, attend that event, start that conversation, or say yes to an invitation that feels slightly outside your comfort zone. The good news is that Madrid gives you plenty of opportunities to do exactly that.

If you’re looking to build your circle, here are a few groups and communities worth checking out:

Girl Gone International | Madrid

One of the largest global communities for women living abroad, Girl Gone International hosts meetups, coffee dates, networking events, and social gatherings. It’s a great place to connect with women who understand what it’s like to start over in a new city.

Meetup

Sometimes the classics work for a reason. Meetup offers everything from hiking groups and language exchanges to photography walks, book clubs, business networking events, and social gatherings. No matter your interests, there’s probably a group for it.

JOMO Community

If you’re looking for intentional connections rather than endless nightlife, JOMO Community hosts events designed around meaningful conversations, creativity, wellness, and shared experiences. *Membership required.

We Are Mussa

A growing community that blends networking, culture, creativity, and social events. It’s particularly popular among internationally minded professionals and creatives looking to expand their circles. *Membership required.

Madrid Language Exchange

Language exchanges are one of Madrid’s social superpowers. Not only can you practice Spanish, but you’ll meet people from dozens of countries who are often in the exact same situation you are.

Guiris de Mierda

With a name that immediately tells you not to take life too seriously, this community has become a favorite among expats and internationals looking to experience Madrid through social events, humor, and shared experiences.

Second Sunday Supper Club

There’s something special about sharing a meal with strangers who quickly become friends. Second Sunday Supper Club creates exactly that kind of atmosphere, bringing people together around good food and even better conversation.

The Secret to Finding Community

The truth is, most people in Madrid are looking for connection too. The person attending the language exchange alone? They’re hoping to make friends. The girl showing up to the networking event by herself? She’s probably nervous too. The Erasmus student who just arrived? They’re looking for community just as much as you are.

Madrid rewards curiosity. It rewards saying yes. It rewards putting yourself in rooms where you don’t know anyone yet, and that’s the beauty of this city. You might arrive knowing nobody, but if you stay open to new experiences, there’s a good chance you’ll leave with friends from five different countries, a calendar full of plans, and a community you never expected to find.

In Madrid, you rarely stay a stranger for long.

Love always,
