How to Get Your Spanish Criminal Background Check: (Certificado de Antecedentes Penales)

If you’re applying for a visa, renewing residency, applying for citizenship, or completing another legal process in Spain, there’s a good chance you’ll eventually need a Spanish Criminal Background Check, officially known as the Certificado de Antecedentes Penales. The good news? This was one of the easiest bureaucratic tasks I’ve completed in Spain, and that’s saying something.

I was able to request mine entirely online from the US using my Spanish Digital Certificate, and the whole process took just a few minutes. Considering Spain’s bureaucracy can sometimes feel inconsistent, this was definitely a pleasant surprise. Here’s exactly how to do it.

Step 1: Make Sure You Have a Digital Certificate

Before you begin, you’ll need a Spanish Digital Certificate (Certificado Digital) installed on your computer. This allows you to securely access Spanish government websites and complete official procedures online without visiting an office in person.

If you don’t have one yet, I highly recommend getting one. It has saved me countless trips and appointments over the years.

Step 2: Visit the Ministry of Justice Website

Navigate to the Spanish Ministry of Justice website and locate the section for requesting a Certificado de Antecedentes Penales. You’ll log in using your Digital Certificate.

When you’re redirected, click on  DNIe / “Certificado Digital”

Step 3: Complete the Application

The application itself is very straightforward. You’ll verify your personal information and confirm that you’re requesting your criminal background certificate. The entire process only takes a few minutes.

Step 4: Pay the Administrative Fee

There is a small administrative fee to process your request. When I applied, it was approx €2.50, although fees can change over time. Payment can typically be completed online during the application process or via Bizum.

Step 5: Download Your Certificate

Once your application has been processed, you’ll be able to download your certificate directly from the website within minutes. No appointments, no waiting in line, and no unnecessary stress. For me, the entire process was incredibly smooth, especially since I completed everything from home. (US)

If you’ve lived in Spain for any length of time, you probably know that government procedures can be unpredictable. Some tasks are surprisingly quick. Others can feel like an Olympic sport in patience. That’s why I was genuinely excited by how simple this process was. Being able to request an official government document online from another country in just a few minutes felt like a small victory. It’s proof that every now and then, Spanish bureaucracy throws you a bone.

My Advice

If you’re living in Spain or plan to stay long-term, get your Digital Certificate as soon as you can. It opens the door to completing so many government procedures online and can save you hours of appointments, travel, and paperwork. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

Sometimes it’s the little wins that deserve celebrating. Being able to request my Spanish Criminal Background Check from my laptop while sitting in the US was one of them. Quick, affordable, and refreshingly painless? I’ll take that as a bureaucratic miracle any day.

Love always,
