Let’s talk about transportation in Spain, because trust me, you’ll use it a lot. Whether you’re hopping from city to city or just getting across town, Spain has some seriously good options. And after living here for a while, I definitely have my favorites.
#1: By train
If I had to pick just one, I’m 100% a Renfe passenger princess. There’s something so romantic and cinematic about train travel in Spain. I’ll grab my seat, throw on a playlist, and just stare out the window as the Spanish countryside rolls by. I’m obsessed with the woman’s voice who announces “Próxima parada: Valencia-Nord.” Like—why does it sound so soothing and elegant? She could tell me my train was delayed for three hours, and I’d still say “thank you.” It’s also one of the most scenic ways to travel. You’ll glide through olive groves, tiny villages, and endless hills that make you fall in love with Spain all over again.
#2: By bus
Specifically, ALSA. I’ve taken that bus more times than I can count, and honestly, it’s one of my favorite ways to get around. It’s comfortable, reliable, and you can even earn points with their rewards program—because who doesn’t love collecting points that turn into euros? Bus rides are also surprisingly scenic, and there’s something peaceful about zoning out while someone else handles the driving. Plus, it’s eco-friendly. You’re basically in one giant carpool with strangers, saving the planet one highway at a time.
#3: By airplane
Back in the US, I loved flying. The energy at the airport, the pre-flight coffee, the rush of takeoff—it all felt so exciting. But here in Spain, it can be a little trickier. Budget airlines like Ryanair or Vueling have a million tiny rules, and somehow your backpack always ends up “too big.” Still, if you want to get across the country fast, flying is unbeatable. It’s perfect for weekend trips to places like Seville, Mallorca, or even hopping over to another country. Just don’t forget to double-check those baggage restrictions, or they’ll get you at the gate.
#4: And finally, by car
Okay, confession: I’ve never actually taken a road trip in Spain. Like, the kind with snacks, music, and no real destination. The only cars I’ve been in are taxis, and those don’t count. I think it’s because I’m from the US, where driving is practically a personality trait. After years of commuting and traffic jams, I’m kinda over it. Spain’s public transportation is too good to bother driving. Still, I’d totally be down for a road trip if someone else drove. There’s something freeing about seeing Spain at your own pace, windows down, music up, and the mountains in the distance.
So, that’s my take on getting around Spain. Trains for comfort, buses for budget, planes for speed, and cars for adventure (if someone else is driving).
What about you? Are you more of a Renfe passenger princess, an ALSA loyalist, or a carry-on warrior sprinting through the airport?
Love always,
