Why Your Phone Still Feels American After Moving to Spain: (And What to Do About It)

Moving to Spain comes with a lot of adjustments, and your phone is one of them. It sounds small, but it actually affects more than you think. When you first arrive, your phone is still basically living in the U.S. Your apps, your App Store, your settings, even the way numbers and measurements show up, are all tied to your original region. So when something doesn’t work the way you expect, you’re like: “Wait, why can’t I download this?”

Yeah, been there.

Your Phone Is Still Set to the U.S.

When you move to Spain, your phone doesn’t automatically adjust. That means you’re still seeing U.S.-based apps, and some Spanish apps might not show up, and prices, formats, and even units might feel off. It’s like you moved countries, but your phone didn’t get the memo. Good news: you can go into your phone settings and change your region to Spain. This helps with:

  • Local formats (dates, currency, etc.)
  • Metric system (hello kilometers and Celsius)
  • A more “Spain-friendly” experience overall

It’s a small change, but it makes things feel a little more aligned with where you actually are.

But Here’s the Catch

Changing your phone’s region is one thing. Changing your App Store region? That’s a whole different situation. Even if your phone is set to Spain, your App Store can still be tied to the U.S., which means some Spanish apps won’t appear, and you might not be able to download certain local services. You’ll be sitting there wondering why an app everyone else has doesn’t exist for you.

The Part I Learned the Hard Way

Yes, you can switch your App Store to Spain, but it’s not as simple as flipping a switch. If you try to change the region on your existing Apple ID (the one you made in the U.S.), you may have to cancel active subscriptions and lose access to things like Apple Music (temporarily or permanently tied to that region). Basically, your account is tied to a system, and changing it can disrupt everything connected to it. And yes, I learned that the hard way my first year. 😭

So… Is It Worth Changing?

Honestly, you don’t have to. I’ve been living in Spain just fine with my App Store still based in the U.S. But there are moments where:

  • I can’t download certain Spanish apps
  • Something doesn’t show up in search
  • I have to find a workaround

So it’s manageable, just slightly inconvenient. Also, I am able to download 98% of Spain-based apps even though my App Store is connected to the US. There are only a few that I’m not able to access, but usually the workaround is somehow logging into my computer or even opening up the application in a browser on my phone if I need it.

What to Consider Before You Decide

Ask yourself:

  • Do I need specific Spanish apps (banking, transport, local services)?
  • Am I okay losing or resetting subscriptions?
  • Do I want everything fully integrated with Spain?

If yes, then switching might be worth it. If not, you can absolutely get by without changing it.

A Simple Workaround Some People Use

Instead of changing your main Apple ID, some people create a second Apple ID based in Spain and use it only for downloading Spanish apps. That way, you keep your U.S. subscriptions, and you still get access to local apps. It’s a little extra effort, but it avoids the headache.

This is one of those things no one really tells you before you move. It’s not a huge issue, but it’s one of those small, everyday inconveniences that make you go: “Why is this harder than it should be?” Just know you’re not doing anything wrong and it’s a system thing, not a you thing. And whether you switch your App Store or not, you’ll figure out what works best for your life here. Because somehow, we always do.

Ah, yes, the beauty of living abroad. It’s funny how the little things like this don’t even cross your mind at first because you’re so focused on the bigger picture. But hopefully this helps take one more thing off your plate and gives you an easier way to access Spain-based apps if you need them.
