My First Impression of the Food in Spain: Guilt-Free, Full, and Actually Loved

Before I moved to Spain, food and I had a complicated relationship. I grew up with fried everything, oversized portions, and a sprinkle of guilt on the side. Eating fast and feeling full (but somehow still unsatisfied) was just the norm. But from my very first meal in Spain… something shifted. Something in me exhaled.

Let me tell you, the food here is? It’s not just “good.” It’s thoughtful. It’s made with real, honest ingredients that feel like they were actually grown in the sun, not wrapped in plastic and shipped across three time zones. I’m talking tomatoes that taste like tomatoes. Olive oil that hits different. Bread that doesn’t feel like a bloated regret.

There’s a sense that meals here are made with care. There’s pride behind the plate, even in the simple ones.

At first, I thought, Wait, that’s it? When I saw the serving size. But here’s the twist: I felt fuller, faster, and more present while eating. It’s like my body got the memo, “we’re being nourished now, not just fed.”

And maybe because I’m no longer inhaling my food between calendar reminders and traffic lights, but actually sitting down and enjoying it, I’ve noticed I eat more slowly. More intentionally. More joyfully. There’s no side of stress with my lunch.

This is huge: I don’t feel guilty about eating here. It’s not about counting every carb or trying to “earn” my next meal. It’s about pleasure, connection, and quality over excess. I’ve eaten fresh-baked bread with zero shame. Ordered dessert because it looked beautiful. Drizzled olive oil like I actually know what I’m doing.

And you know what? My body feels lighter. My mind feels calmer. And for once, food feels like a friend, not a battle.

Spain is teaching me something I didn’t even know I needed: how to enjoy food again. To sit. To taste. To feel full in more ways than one. So, if you’re wondering what the food in Spain is like? It’s simple. Delicious. Made with love. It’s not trying to impress you. It’s trying to take care of you.

And honestly? I’m letting it.

Love always,
